“Almost Home” Animal Sanctuary

A 200 acre animal sanctuary for homeless, abandoned, or abused companion animals

Untitled-3

Recently, a very generous donor gave NAC the opportunity to realize the dream that started it all. Two hundred scenic acres in the foothills north of Boise will soon become Almost Home, a no-kill companion animal sanctuary that will provide a safe place for homeless, abandoned, or abused companion animals to romp and play until they find their forever families.

“Almost Home” will allow NAC to:

Animals

  • Provide long-term or lifetime care for companion animals with special emotional or physical needs or for those who never find their forever home.
  • Perform high-volume, low-cost spaying and neutering in our state-of the-art veterinary facility to effectively reduce the number of healthy companion animals euthanized each year right here in our community.
  • Care for larger companion animals such as horses, goats, and potbelly pigs that our current capacity does not allow.

People

  • Work with community outreach programs to give local at-risk youths opportunities to learn responsibility and gain self-esteem and important skills while having fun.
  • Work with local high schools and universities to offer internships for those wishing to learn more about companion animal care.
  • Welcome volunteers from around the community, the state, and the nation. An innovative volunteer destination program modeled after the extremely successful program at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah will attract people wishing to make a difference for both companion animals and people. The sanctuary land will house several cabins which will allow extended volunteer stays, sure to bring visitors and dollars into our community.
  • Offer the public a welcome retreat, just minutes from Boise. The expansive sanctuary grounds will be complete with native landscaping, walking trails, visitor cabins, and summer events to be held in our scenic amphitheater.

Programs

  • Offer innovative adoption programs that provide families the space and support they need to find that special furry someone.
  • Facilitate education programs that will offer school groups, scout troops, individuals, and families the opportunity to learn responsibility and compassion toward companion animals in an exciting and unique setting.
  • Like many other forward-looking communities, a no-kill companion animal sanctuary, in addition to an aggressive low-cost spay/neuter program, a highly visible adoption campaign, and partnerships between animal rescue organizations, can make the Treasure Valley a no-kill community.

Partnerships

  • Continue building partnerships with other Treasure Valley animal rescue organizations to implement community-wide solutions to address pet overpopulation and euthanasia.
  • Showcase building and design concepts that respect our high desert climate location. The structures at Almost Home use the latest innovations in energy efficiency and conservation, such as passive solar and a sheltered earth concept. Not only will Almost Home preserve precious natural resources, our overhead costs will be reduced.
